Welcome to July's SECOND Wild Card Friday. On the fourth (and fifth) Fridays of every month I've invited one of my writer friends to share something fun and then tell you a bit about their work. This week Janean Worth shares an excerpt from her new book: DEEP DOWN.

Take it away Janean!

Living as we do in a land of plenty, where our daily needs, and most of our wants, are easily accessible, I think that we often forget what it might be like to go without normal, everyday blessings in our lives.

For instance, when you’re hungry, it is very easy to stroll to the fridge and grab something to nosh on, but what would you do if the food supply for your location was suddenly withheld by a government agency and you were prevented from leaving the area to try to get something to eat?

And what would you do if the very air that you needed to survive was denied to you?  Would you struggle to survive, or would you be too frightened of violence to do anything to save yourself?

But what if it wasn’t only your life that was in danger?  What would you do if those surrounding you were rapidly dying of an unknown contagion, and they were denied the medication that would save their lives?  Would you try to save them, or would you flee from their company in order to save yourself?  If you knew that over one hundred people would die if you didn’t risk your own life to help them, would you be brave enough to try?

In my new Suspense novel, DEEP DOWN, these are exactly the questions that Sam Stone and Jenny Strafford must ask themselves.  When they’re accidentally trapped in a terrifying situation that tests both their mettle and their fortitude, they must dig deep to find the answers.

 Excerpt of DEEP DOWN:

A cold December wind buffeted the mobile CDC command center, setting it to rocking slightly on its wheels as it sat in the small parking lot of the Strata museum.
Logan Stanley ignored the rocking motion under his feet as he stood rigidly in front of his boss.  Anger flared through every bone in his body and he strained to keep it in check.
“You’re not serious, Sir?” Logan asked, staring hard at his superior, unwilling to believe that the man was so incredibly cold-hearted.
Dennis Malnon didn’t even flinch at his tone.  The man seemed either not to notice Logan’s anger, or he simply did not care whether Logan was angry or not.  Either way, what he was proposing was astounding, and Logan couldn’t let it go.
Slim, bordering on emaciated, the CDC supervisor was also overly tall, giving him a stork-like appearance.   His long, beaked nose accentuated this resemblance, as did his beady eyes, slightly stooped shoulders and a head full of white hair that had been cut short, combed neatly and plastered to his skull with lots of hair product.  The man’s angular, avian face showed no emotion as he gazed back at Logan.
“I’m completely serious, Logan.  In situations like these, when you’re dealing with an unknown, a hundred or so lives is an acceptable loss when compared to a global pandemic.”

Deep down, six hundred and forty feet underground, danger lurks...

What starts as an evening out at an underground museum soon turns into a dangerous struggle to survive…

Jenny Strafford and her fiance, Stone, are out for a dinner date with friends. It’s supposed to be fun - romantic even - but it soons turns deadly when they’re trapped deep underground with a mysterious contagion.

When the unthinkable happens, and a quarantine zone is initiated, Jenny soon realizes that the government agency that has been sent to help them isn't planning on a happy ending.

In order to protect Jenny, Stone must fall back on his military training. And even those hard-won skills may not be enough to save the love of his life, or the other one hundred innocent people trapped deep underground with them.

An all-new series with an all-new hero.
Sam Stone will take your breath away.

DEEP DOWN is available as an ebook or paperback at Amazon and in paperback wherever fine books are sold (check your local bookstore).
